Manchester City have stepped up their efforts to land Stevan Jovetic as they prepare to make a fresh move for the Fiorentina striker in the January transfer window.
The Blues’ football development executive Patrick Vieira flew to Italy to check on Jovetic during Fiorentina’s 2-1 defeat by Inter Milan on Sunday.
Roberto Mancini tried to sign the 22-year-old striker in the summer but the Serie A side ignored his overtures.
The Blues remain keen and hoped to make a preliminary agreement to see off interest from Italian giants Juventus in the Montenegro international, who bagged 14 goals in 27 appearances last season.
Fiorentina’s technical director Eduardo Macia conceded that Jovetic will eventually have to be let go.
‘It will be very difficult to keep him at Fiorentina, he is a great player, who will eventually play for another club,’ he said.
‘For us his situation is similar to that of Steven Gerrard for Liverpool. This summer we decided that Jovetic was not on the market and he understood it perfectly despite Juventus’ offer.’
